Inner work is an important part of one’s healing and spiritual development journey. It involves turning your focus inwards with the practice of self-reflection so you can develop awareness over your internal workings. Internal workings would be your beliefs, emotions, personality and perceptions. It’s important to know these things because your outer world is a reflection of your inner world. So if you’re struggling with painful things in your life, it’s because you have internal turmoil that your life is simply mirroring. To get rid of those problems, you’ll have to address them from within.
As Hermes so famously said:
“As above, so below.
As within, so without.
As the universe, so the soul.”
The Concept of Inner Work
The concept of inner work derives from the ancient practice of alchemy, where base metals were transmuted into gold for healing and immortality purposes. Instead of metals, inner work is about taking internal darkness (pain and suffering) and transmuting it into light (spiritual growth) for the purpose of expanding consciousness.
It requires you to take your thoughts, beliefs and emotions that form your current reality and transmute them energetically into higher states of consciousness where you have an expanded understanding of reality. Basically, it’s about extracting the value out of the events in your life by re-interpreting them from a higher spiritual perspective. The value is the life lesson hidden in the experience that wiill help you grow spiritually.
How to Start Doing Inner Work?
When it comes to healing, consciousness or spirituality, these are non-linear and abstract subjects. It’s difficult to systemize them into step-by-step processes that everyone can follow. However, if you want to get started with inner work, here are three things I recommend you try:
1. Journaling
Journaling is one of the easiest self-reflection techniques you can adopt to build self-awareness. It’s simple to start and you can do it anywhere. There is a specific way to journal for healing and self-improvement. You can read my blog post here to learn how. I also have some free journal prompts you can use to get started.
2. Music Meditation
Meditation is another practice that helps you get in touch with your internal spiritual self. There are many types of meditations that aim to achieve different things. You’ll have to experiment and see what works best for you. I create light language sound healing music encoded with frequencies that help you access your subconscious mind and gain insights about your life. It’s a very gentle way to begin dipping your toes into inner work. You can find them for free on my YouTube channel.
3. Coaching/Mentorship
If you want to dive a little deeper but aren’t sure how, you can consider working with a coach or mentor. Having an experienced facilitator guide you will help familiarize you to the process of inner work until you feel comfortable enough to do it on your own. I offer private spiritual consultations that will assist you through the process of inner work.
Finding the Lesson
Everyone goes through challenges and setbacks in life. These challenges are part of the human experience and they serve a purpose. There are valuable lessons hiding within each problem. These lessons are there to encourage you to heal your wounds and develop into a better version of yourself. This is what inner work in spirituality is all about.
You have the ability to overcome these challenges and change your life into a more positive experience. It comes down to being able to understand what these experiences are trying to show you. From that knowledge, you can then make better choices that will create a more desirable life.
In essence, you need to figure out the lesson hiding within the problem, understand the reason for it and actualize the learning in your life. An important part of this is embodiment work. It’s where you consciously engage with the emotions that arise from your experiences and work to fully accept the truth of what they’re trying to show you about yourself. Emotions always show you something. They lead you to the limiting beliefs you are subconsciously holding so you can consciously analyze them and let them go. This is how you alchemize your emotional pain into spiritual growth.
